"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" when using Bitlocker for the first time.

Hello,

I'm trying to enable Bitlocker on a PC but I have the following error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" when trying to enable Bitlocker on any HDD of the PC for the first time.

The PC is using UEFI and the TPM has been initialized by Windows 8. TPM owner password has been set and the status inside Windows shows that the TPM is ready to be used.

How can I enable Bitlocker on this PC? I have tried all HDD but the error is the same everytime, I don't think this is related to HDD/SSD then.

Based on my research, it could be related to your HDD/SSD. I suggest you replace the HDD for a test.

I tried to do the same on all my HDD but nothing worked. I still have the same error.

Any idea?

Hello again;

When using Bitlocker to go, it's fine.

But it is still not working on any of my HDD, even after doing a checkdisk on all the drives.

Any clue?

Regards,

Looks like bitlocker wizard keeps trying to use software encryption despite the TPM chip when looking at Windows logs.

If I'm preventing software encryption by using local GPO, I have an error when trying to start bitlocker saying that GPO are blocking bitlocker.

Any idea how to force hardware encryption?

Hello again and sorry for spamming much, but I would like to give as many information as possible.

Regarding hardware encryption, this isn't what I want but I have been reported that this is for special hard drive disks. So I have disabled the GPO to enforce HW encryption.

Meanwhile, I have set the following GPO : computer config => admin models => windows comp => bitlocker => operating system drives => require additional authentication at startup and uncheck the first box to force the usage of my TPM chip but I still have the same error.

Does anybody knows if there is a specified Windows log or an app to see why I have my I/O error?

Hi, where you able to resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem with a new laptop but not using TPM.

Have so far tried both Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise on this laptop but get the below error as soon as I try to enable bit-locker:

Starting BitLocker - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

The laptop has both a SSD and HDD and I get the same error for either. Unfortunately chkdsk C: /r /f hasn't helped.

Have checked the GPO and successfully enabled bitlocker on a few other laptop models using this GPO without issue.

Anyone else encountered this issue?

Hello, I didn't solve my issue. I'm looking forward to Windows 8.1 to see if things are better or not.

Are you saying that there are a lot of new laptops with bad hard drives or just the laptops with the /SSD?

I ran chkdsk C: /r /f. It hung up at 12% three times. I assume it can't deal with a HDD/SDD.

I have updated/reinstalled the Intel drivers after installing Windows 8.1 and not the issue is that the BIOS doesn't communicate correctly with the TPM chip.

Give it a try and reinstall the following drivers

-Intel(R) Chipset Device Software Version: 9.4.0.1027

-Intel Rapid Storage Version: 12.8.0.1016

-Intel management engine interface Version: 12.0.0.49974

Bitlocker was the only reason I chose the "Pro" edition of Windows 8. Now they are passing it off has bad hard drives? I guess that I purchased two new computers both with bad drives.

Could you check the make and model for your SSD, I have come accross issues with some Liteon SSDs that do not work with TPM

maybe this is too late, but I think I have found a solution to this (at least on my machine it worked after this fix):

It is related to the firmware of the SSD not the SSD itself, so after updating to the newest version of the firmware and restarting it, bitlocker magically work :)
